ugh. i just leaned over to adject the door and i guess i hit a button on the keyboard and lost everything i started typing. bleh. i seem to do that often, except only on places like this where i cant get it back.
yesterday i got to cadv, almost late, and we had a presentation instead of lecture. it was a presentation for invisible children. since i got involved with twloha, i have been look at and toward other non profits as well. invisible children seems to show up a lot of places though i never really knew what it was about and didnt take the time to learn. that was a mistake on my part and i am glad that we had this presentation so that i could learn about this organization.
three college students from san diego went to africa and set out to make a documentary of their experience. in africa they learned of of the war in uganda and the displacement camps. they stayed in these displacment camps and learned the stories and ways of life of the people who were forced to live their. this was an eye opening experience and when they returned ot the us they felt obligated to share what they had learned. starting with friends and family they screened their documentary, this documentry grew into an organization and a movement. these students are fighting to make a change, to bring awareness and fight for peace.
i think that that is both amazing and inspiring. i often times forget how large the world really is. while im safe in my nice two story house, fighting with my family over what to have for dinner, there are people a lot closer than i realize fighting for anything for dinner. the world is a big place and im only small person. i may not be able to end world hunger or achieve world peace, but i can change the i live. i can become more aware of the world around me and help bring awareness to the people that i come in contact with. i want to make a difference and i want to be a change, but i dont know how i want to go about doing that. the most important thing i have learned is before you can try and know someone else you have to know yourself, you have to help yourself first.
broken people can help broken people and twloha has proved that possible. you can bring awareness with your story, make change with your life experience, make a differnce with your own efforts but you cant let yourself fall at the expense of others. that is something i am still learning how to balence. when we look for help, we dont want some super human person, someone greater than us, we want someone like us, someone that can relation, someone that can sympathize rather than empathize. that is the person i want to be, i want to be human, i want dont want to be anything greater or higher than anyone else, i just want to be a hand to be held, an ear to listen and open arms to hug, i want to be a friend.
i think that a friend is the best thing anyone can be and anyone can have in their life. though i have had my share of problems with friends, i have been hurt, used, replaced, i feel extremely lucky to have a few special people in my life. not to say that all or any of these relationships have been easy or perfect, but through them i have learned more about myself and more about life in general. i feel extremely fortunate to have a couple of people who i can truely call my friends. to them i say thank you. we are all beautiful people in a beautiful world, sometimes it just takes a little time and effort to acknowlege and appreciate that beauty and when we do, its rare and unique but its amazing. be a friend and you will find a friend.
i dont really know how i switched gears from what i intended to right about, but thats all fine.
have a good day.
and smile.
