the assignment was to create a silicon mold and from that mold create at least 36 units to be used to create a sculpture. i made a hand. unfortunately i wasnt satisfied with the way it came out and ended up having to sand down each one to make it smooth and meet to my approval. with 36 hands completed i got approval to paint them. my original idea was to create a circle of a rainbow with the hands holding hands. with only left hands it was difficult to have them holding hands, nevertheless i had my plan. when getting the painting idea approved, he didnt liked my rainbow idea, or at least not to portray the message i had told him; he told me it would portray homosexuality, which i actually liked as a subcontext for my message but didnt want it to be the overt primary message. i resorted to laying the 36 hands out on a piece of cardboard and using all the colors of the rainbow splatter painting them all at the same time, resulting in 36 hands all sharing the same rainbow colors but each different.
hands of color
my completed piece, photographed atop the cardboard it was painted on.
together in sculpture, the hands portray unity in diversity. the circular structure symbolizes unity and a whole. the hands extended from the side are almost grabbing the other hands, "helping" them up.
