there is no excuse for not trying

i just watched obamas back to school speech.
my mom brought up the speech last week when she was confused as to why people were against him giving this speech. apparently he announced he wanted to give a back to school speech as previous presidents, regan and bush did, but conservatives feared that this speech would be propaganda used to indoctrinate and brainwash the children which his political agenda. with such a commotion many schools refused to air the address and many parents requested to keep their children out of school as to not be exposed to the speech. to ease the commotion, the transcripts of the speech were released yesterday so parents and administrates could review the speech and determine if it was appropriate to share with the students. many individuals changed their minds and admitted to find the speech inspiring and just what was needed.
after listening to the speech, i think that obama shared important words and delivered and important message to students all over the country.
i feel guilty that i have no taken advantage of the opportunities i have been presented and that i have not taken the most out of my education. quickly i learned how to get the grades and make it through classes. i do what i need to do to get through a class and get the grade i want, but i dont take away much from the experience. knowing that i want to be a teacher i do not want students like myself, but students who are enthusiastic about and engaged in their education, something that is mocked and made fun of in schools. i also realize that retaining little information from my years of school, i am unqualified to teach the information to students and will have to relearn it all (which of course i am not because i am not in liberal studies)


among the many important words obama shared, the quote that sticks with me the most is "there is no excuse for not trying". this is something i can not tell myself enough; i need to continue to push myself to achieve the goals that i aspire to.
