last night before meeting my friends for dinner i stopped at my grandmas like i do every night. before leaving i said to her, "tomorrow is thanksgiving. you should think about what you are thankful for." she replied by saying, "there are so many things". my grandma is bedridden in a nursing home cognitively displaced from back to back strokes, often not even recognizing me. even if it just happened to be a good moment i caught her on, its beautiful that my grandma who has no life comparable to the life she had the morning of her stroke, she still finds that there is so much to be thankful for and has found reason to live in the depressant state she has for the last four years.
so often it is easier to think of what i dont have or what i would rather have or how something could be better. i have made a tremendous effort to kill this habit, but from time to time i find myself regressing to this automatic reflex. the truth is, while i might want this or that, or wish things to be different, i have so much to be thankful for and appreciative of.
on this thanksgiving, take a moment to think of what you are thankful for and all the wonderful things in your life. happy thanksgiving.
